The Mystery of the Blue Morpho

When we were watching some boys play soccer, we saw a BIG butterfly. We didn't know what it was at first, but then Mommy said that it was a Blue Morpho. And it was. It's brown on the underside but you can only see that when its wings go up. We read that they aren't really blue but the sunlight makes their wings look blue. But we don't know what color they really are. That's the mystery.

  1. How interesting about the color of the Blue Morpho--I did not know that. But it sounds like the situation with the Indigo Bunting. Did I ever tell you that it is not really blue (or indigo)? When it's not in the sun, it's black. As I understand it, there's something about its feathers that bends or diffracts the light, making the feathers appear blue. Perhaps it's the same with the butterfly (although of course the butterfly does not have feathers!).
