We are on the Osa Peninsula. Mommy and Daddy saw something from our porch. They thought it was a monkey, then they thought it was a raccoon. Then I saw it and thought it was a bird. Mommy went to get the naturalist. He said what it was -- a Laughing Falcon eating a snake. The snake hanging down confused Mommy and Daddy. They thought it was a long tail. The falcon has black and white stripes on its tail. It looks like it has a mask with black around its eyes. I want to see it again.
Ooooh, Sam--what a great bird. I have never seen one but I have heard of it, especially its call--"laughing like a maniac"! I hope you get to see it again and that you get to hear it. In my bird book, it talks about it catching a snake and carrying it to a perch to eat it--exactly what you saw. Wow, it's a big bird, too, no wonder your parents thought it was a monkey or a raccoon. Its great that you have a naturalist there to help you identify all the birds and other animals you see. I think you are going to see a lot, you lucky duck! Nana

Clearly Mommy and Daddy need to do more work with their flash cards. That is definitely not a monkey.
